2010"Up the Sacramento River Canyon on old Highway 99", second in our Landmarks & Legends series. Beginning at Mountain Gate, CA we take a historical journey on old Highway 99N up the Sacramento River Canyon to Castella. This video includes family stories, a little history, and over 300 personal and historical photographs. Some places we visit no longer exist (are under the waters of Shasta Lake) and some places are just names on road signs.....the towns are gone. Some narrations are read by descendants of families that lived there. The video is to give you a glimpse into what life was like from around 1900 into the "Fifties" for those folks living "in the canyon". Many pioneers' stories are included, as well as, a couple of Native American legends, a story about "Black Bart", and an old time railroad clipping. Naming a few of the stops are: in the Mountain Gate area: ranches of Endicott, Fish, Peterson & Rodrieguez, the Buffalo Ranch and Bass Hill; Pit River Bridge; O'Brien; Salt Creek; "Old Pollock"; Lakeshore; "New Pollock"; Lakehead; Gregory/Smithson/Antler; Matquaw Flat; Riverview; Dog Creek Bridge; Trail Inn; Delta; LaMoine; Gibson; Herron's Motel; Conant; Vollmers; Sims Bridge; Sims/Hazel Creek; Slate Creek; Pollard Flat; Sweetbriar; Castle Crags, and Castella. The next time you travel on I-5 in the Sacramento River Canyon, you will be linking the road signs to this video and you may even stop to look for a few old landmarks that still remain......
